DIALOGUE BETWEEN AN EDITOR AND KAAYATHRI

KAAYATHRI : Good morning Miss Kate. I'm really glad to                             meet u.

KATE: Good morning Kaayathri. Its my pleasure.

KAAYATHRI : As an editor, what do you do for your authors                        besides edit?

KATE : At Kingstone , the editors are the gatekeepers. What this means in practical terms is that wherever possible, we talk to you for the rest of the company and to the rest of the company for you. So for example, if you are missing your author copies or need royalty info or any of a hundred other things, we follow up.

KAAYATHRI : What’s your favorite part of being an editor?

KATE : The enormous paycheck. Oh, how I crack myself up. No the answer is – great writing and being the first to read it.

KAAYATHRI : Your least favorite?

KATE: Bad writing.

KAAYATHRI : How important is the synopsis?

KATE : I gotta tell you - a great synopsis is just not that important. The synopsis comes in most handy after the book is bought and the cover copy is being written. It is solely about the book and the quality of the writing. I do understand writers’ anxiety concerning synopses, but in this instance I fear it is a titch misplaced.

KAAYATHRI : How involved are you with getting books to new places, i.e., Bravas to Australia?

KATE: I’ve had meetings with both UK and Australian publishers and not one saw the potential of Brava and the Bad Boys. I continue to try as do our subsidiary rights people. And I thought it was a no-brainer. I think it would be spectacular to have an Australian partner in this.

KAAYATHRI : What about getting the books, specifically the Bravas, to bookclubs like Venus and Doubleday and Rhapsody?

KATE: We submit every book to the book club editors and they make the decision.

KAAYATHRI : Who is responsible for errors and inconsistencies in books? The author, obviously, but the editor too?

KATE :  It would be my responsibility, as well. Without a doubt. Sure, the author wrote it but I am the editor and I should do my homework. If I haven't worked with the author before, meaning if I just inherited a series, I should read the backlist. I would have a lot of explaining to do around here if a big mistake happened on my watch. I really hope this question doesn’t refer to one of my authors and that you are setting me up to resign. I really love my new office.

KAAYATHRI : What do you like to do in your off time?

KATE: Sometimes, I just collapse. I hate housework and even though I am not really good at it, when it’s not a school night, I like to cook. I read a lot, for work and for pleasure and I love old movies and some not so old movies. I have a wonderful family and great friends who put up with me.

KAAYATHRI : What authors do you enjoy reading off the job?

KATE : How much time do you have – Linda Howard, Linda Lael Miller, Julie Garwood, Christina Dodd, Cathy Maxwell, Victoria Alexander, Nora, Jo Beverley, Betina Krahn, Jennifer Crusie, Alexander McCall Smith, Minette Walters, Elizabeth   George and others too numerous to mention. I like narrative non-fiction, biographies and mysteries.

KAAYATHRI : Great. Really thank you for spent a wonderful time me Kate. I Really happy for u Miss Kate.

KATE: Ain't mention Kaayathri. I'm really enjoy this hour with you. I'm glad to meet with you.

KAAYATHRI : Thank you Miss Kate.

MOTHER TERESA

The famous person i like the most is Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa was the founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to helping the poor.Catholic nun and missionary Mother Teresa was born circa August 26, 1910, in Skopje, the current capital of the Republic of Macedonia. On August 27, 1910, a date frequently cited as her birthday, she was baptized as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.
In 1919, when Mother Teresa was only 8 years old, her father suddenly fell ill and died. While the cause of his death remains unknown, many have speculated that political enemies poisoned him. In the aftermath of her father's death, Mother Teresa became extraordinarily close to her mother, a pious and compassionate woman who instilled in her daughter a deep commitment to charity.
Moreover, i like Mother Teresa's achievements. She is a Noble Peace Prize laureate, Mother Teresa helped the poor and destitute people living in the slums of Kolkata. The Roman Catholic Nun established center for AIDS patients in 1985 and founded Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta in 1969. Her selfless service is recognized worldwide today. Mother Teresa also got many awards for her sacrifice. On 1962 she got Padma Shri award; on 1969 she got Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding; on 1962 she also got Ramon Magsaysay Award.
Furthermore, on May 24, 1937, she took her Final Profession of Vows and with that acquired the name, which the world recognizes her with today, Mother Teresa. The next twenty years of her life, Mother Teresa dedicated to serving as a teacher at the St Mary’s School, graduating to the post of the principal in 1944.  Within the walls of the convent, Mother Teresa was known for her love, kindness, compassion and generosity. Her unflinching commitment to serving the society and mankind was greatly recognized by students and teachers. However, just as much Mother Teresa enjoyed teaching young girls, she was greatly disturbed by the poverty and misery that was prevalent in Calcutta.
Then, Mother Teresa’s health started declining in the 1980s. The first instance of the same was seen when she suffered a heart attack while visiting Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1983.  For the next decade, Mother Teresa constantly faced health issues. Cardiac problems seemed to live by her, as she experienced no respite even after heart surgery.  Her declining health led her to step down as the head of the order on March 13, 1997. Her last visit abroad was to Rome, when she visited Pope John Paul II for the second time. Upon returning to Calcutta, Mother Teresa spent her last few days receiving visitors and instructing sisters. The greatly compassionate soul left for the heavenly abode on September 5, 1997. Her death was mourned by the world over. In 2003, Mother Teresa was beautified by Pope John Paul II at St Peter’s Basilica, in Vatican City. Since then, she has been known as Blessed Mother Teresa. Along with Blessed Pope John Paul II, the Church designated Blessed Teresa of Calcutta as the patron saint of the World Youth Day.
Mother Teresa was a gift from our god. Her sacrifice for this world is very greater. She is the greatest role model to everyone. Mother Teresa was lived as a mother to every orphan and poor children. For me Mother Teresa is a biggest gift for us. She is the greatest and famous person in this world.

A LETTER TO AN EDITOR.

A complaint letter to the editor of a newspaper

Dear editor,

I am writing to tell your readers my terrible experience at Lucky Choice Seafood Restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui.  Last weekend was my friend’s birthday.  She loves seafood, so I took her to Lucky Choice to celebrate her birthday.

As soon as we sat down, a waiter recommended the Garoupa to us, saying that it had just arrived and was offered at a bargain price.  We ordered a steamed Garoupa and a few other dishes.  After we had ordered the dishes, we started to feel regret.  The fish tank behind us was full of dead fish.  We could only hope that our Garoupa was not there.  The kitchen door was opened and we could look inside clearly.  To my surprise, the chef was smoking while preparing food.  I could see cigarette ashes falling into the food, but he seemed not really care.

The restaurant is supposed to be new, but the hygiene condition was unacceptable.  There were ants crawling on the tablecloth and rats were spotted running on the floor.  We had lost our appetite before the dishes arrived.

The steamed Garoupa came first.  It not look fresh.  The fish eyes were running out.  We had the first bite and threw it up at once.  It was stale and tasted terrible.  We were very angry and complained to the manager at once.  To my astonishment, the manager did not apologize to us.  Instead, he said to us, `If you don’t like the food, get out!’  He was so rude.  He opened the door with force and asked us to leave at once.

The treatment we received at Lucky Choice Seafood Restaurant is totally unacceptable.  As a restaurant, they should observe the rules of hygiene.  They should not offer food that is not fresh.  Do they know that food poisoning can kill?

Poor food and bad service will definitely ruin Hong Kong’s reputation as a food paradise.  We cannot afford to lose this in the economic downturn.  I hope the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department will look into the matter and help Lucky Choice Seafood Restaurant to improve their service.

HEALTHY FOOD !

HEALTH FOODINTRODUCTION

Health food is food considered to be beneficial to health in ways that go beyond a normal healthy diet required for human nutrition. Because there is no precise, authoritative definition from regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, different dietary practices can be considered healthy depending on context. Foods considered "healthy" may be natural foods, organic foods, whole foods, and sometimes vegetarian or dietary supplements. Such products are sold in health food stores or in the health/organic sections of supermarkets.

Could you be addicted to food? 5 secrets to controlling your cravings

I’ve had a few recent run-ins with dark-chocolate M&Ms. Here’s what happens: I’ll grab a few of the candies then sit down at my computer to meet a writing deadline. Type a few words, then walk back the cabinet for more M&Ms. Two sentences. Three M&Ms. The more difficult the subject matter, the less I’m able to focus on writing and the more overwhelming is the pull of the M&Ms.
In the March/April issue of EatingWell, science writer Rachael Moeller Gorman tackles the topic of food addiction—the idea that food can overtake the same brain circuits involved in drug and alcohol addictions. Could I be addicted to chocolate? I could be: people who chronically crave food aren’t so different from people who suffer drug or alcohol addiction, say some experts, including Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
But I’m not addicted to chocolate. For me, overeating M&Ms is situational—the latest manifestation of a chronic procrastination problem that gets worse when I’m under the gun and low on sleep. And, in fact, dealing with issues like stress and too little sleep can help “cure” food cravings, Volkow told Gorman recently. Here are her tips to stave off overeating*:
1. Anticipate moments of weakness. “You preset yourself [to say], no matter what, you’re not going to allow yourself to be tempted by the food,” says Volkow. “It’s much easier to control your urges if you do it beforehand than if they take you by surprise.” For example, if you tend to binge on candy while working at your computer, cut up melon and keep it on your desk so you’re less likely to visit the vending machine.

2. Take one flavor at a time. “If I give you just one item, say, apples, you will get saturated with the flavor of apples,” says Volkow. “But if I mixed different alternative flavors, you actually can go from one to the other,” eating a lot more than if you only had one type of food on your plate. So keep your meal relatively simple.
3. Ban eating in the car and in front of the TV. “Set up a space for eating so these other activities and spaces don’t get conditioned with the food,” suggests Volkow. Then eat only at the table, using a plate and doing nothing but eating and talking to your tablemates.
4. Don’t skimp on shut-eye. “It has now been recognized that sleep deprivation increases the risk of overeating and obesity,” says Volkow. The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night for adults.

5. Keep your cool. “When a person is stressed, that decreases their ability to exert control over desires,” says Volkow. Squelch your stress with exercise: you can schedule daily workouts for a natural high. Volkow also recommends keeping your workout bag packed and ready to use during high-pressure times. “If I am in a very stressful condition,” she says, “I go and I run.”

Health claims

The United States, health-related claims onnutrition facts labels are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), while advertising is regulated by theFederal Trade Commission. According to the FDA, "Health claims describe a relationship between a food, food component, or dietary supplement ingredient, and reducing risk of a disease or health-related condition".
In general, claims of health benefits for specific foodstuffs have not been evaluated by national regulatory agencies. Additionally, research funded by manufacturers or marketers that may form the basis of such marketing claims has been shown to result in more favorable results than independently funded research.
While there is no precise definition for "health food", the United States Food and Drug Administration has warned food manufacturers against labeling foods as being "healthy" when they have a high sugar, salt, or fat content.

Examples

The following is a non-exhaustive list of foods considered healthy:

Be a Healthy Eating Role Model

Parents are role models and the most
important influence in their children’s lives.
Your attitude about food and eating habits might
influence your children:
 Do you skip breakfast?
 Do you drink sodas rather than milk with your
meals?
 Do you diet all the time and have a fear of (or
talk about) eating “bad” food?
 Do you snack all day long?
 Do you eat in front of the TV?
 Do you eat whenever you are bored or under
stress?
If you answered “yes” to more than a few of these
questions, you are likely sending unhealthy messages
to your child about food.

Healthy Eating Starts

With Parents
Modeling healthy eating supports the development of
healthy behaviors in children. Here are a few healthy
eating habits parents can role model for their children:
 Never skip meals—especially breakfast.
 Take moderate portions.
 Limit junk food in the house.
 Drink water and milk instead of soda.
 Eat foods from all food groups—milk, fruit, vegetables,
whole grains and lean meats, fish & beans.
 Try fruit and yogurt for dessert.

Teaching Healthy Habits at
Mealtime
Children won’t perceive healthy eating as important if it
is not something that they see you doing.
 Eat the way you want your child to eat—try new
foods together but don’t force your children to try
them.
 Avoid emphasizing “good” and “bad” foods—teach
your child that he or she needs to balance nutritious
food with fun snacks.
 Show ways for managing stress that do not include
eating.
 Encourage your kids to help prepare meals, set the
table and help with dishes.
 Enjoy your meals—positive attitudes are contagious!

Eating meals as a family plays a key role in raising high achieving,
healthy and well-adjusted children.

Improved Academic Achievement

 Frequent family meals are linked with being successful in
school, including getting better grades and scoring higher on
achievement tests.
Better Nutrition

 Family meals contribute to higher daily intakes of important
nutrients like calcium, fiber, iron, vitamins B6 and B12, C and
E, and less overall dietary fat.
Higher Self-Esteem

 Mealtime conversation brings the family together, promotes
positive self-esteem in children and starts a lasting and positive
relationship with food.
Making Mealtime Family Time

Family meals should be dynamic—an
exchange of ideas, conversation and feelings.
Mealtime is a wonderful opportunity to
strengthen family ties and pass on family
cultural traditions.
 Eat together as a family whenever
possible.
 Keep mealtime pleasant—avoid power
struggles over what gets eaten, and
remember that mealtime is not a time
for discipline.
 Turn off the TV, video games, mobile phones and the
computer.
 Use conversation-starters to get children talking, such as
“What is the best thing that happened today at school?”

Most parents tend to worry about what their kids are eating since nutrition is so important to good health. As adults, we can more easily make the decision to eat food that is delicious and nutritious, but children can be picky eaters, liking only foods that are easy on the palate. It takes patience and a strategy to get your kid to eat a wide range of nutritious foods.

Conclusion: Living a Healthy Diet for the Rest of Your Life

The more we eat healthy, the less natural it feels to reach for a piece of cookie or a bag of chips when we get hungry. It is then not a matter of depriving ourselves or forcing ourselves, but simply a conscious recognition of respecting what feels the best for our body in the long-term run.
When we eat healthy, we physically feel good. We mentally have more energy to do the things that matter. When we are both globally conscious and personally healthy in our eating choices, we are contributing to the welfare of the planet. Our decision to practice healthy eating habits has so many consequences in so many ways.
Now that you have all the information you need on eating healthy, the most important action step you can do is to maintain this lifestyle choice as much as possible. Post intents when you need motivation from others. Keep a diary of your food choices on your blog or journal. Talk to other people when you are feeling tempted to indulge in unhealthy desserts.
Eating healthy, after all, is not about losing your ability to enjoy indulgences. It is a matter of gaining so many things that will affect you for the rest of your life: a longer life, the ability to enjoy natural foods, a wholesome sense of self-esteem and the joy of respecting your body for all that it does for you.
